FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is my data private?

Yes. Your garage, maintenance logs, dream cars, and fuel data are stored in a private encrypted database. No other user can access your data. We never sell or share your personal information. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Can I recover a deleted maintenance entry?

Yes — deleted entries aren't permanently removed right away. They move to a Recently Deleted section at the bottom of the Maintenance tab and can be restored within 30 days. After 30 days they are permanently deleted.

How does VIN auto-fill work?

When you type a 17-digit VIN on the Add Car screen, the app calls the free NHTSA government database and automatically fills in the year, make, and model. No account or fee required — it uses public safety data.

Why is my VIN hidden?

VINs are masked by default to protect your privacy — the number is stored securely but displayed as dots so it isn't visible at a glance. Tap the eye icon next to any VIN field to reveal the number. Tap it again to hide it. This applies on the Add Car, Edit Details, and car detail screens.

How is MPG calculated?

MPG is calculated automatically when you log a fill-up with an odometer reading. The app takes the miles driven since your last fill-up (current odometer minus previous odometer) and divides by the gallons pumped. You need at least two fill-ups with odometer readings for MPG to appear.

Can I scan a gas station receipt?

Yes. On any car's Fuel Log, tap the 📷 Scan Receipt button and photograph your receipt. AI extracts the gallons, price per gallon, total cost, fuel type, and date automatically. You can review and edit before saving.

Can I scan a parts receipt into a project?

Yes (Collector plan). Open a project, go to the Parts section, and tap 📷 Scan Receipt. Photograph or upload a parts/mods purchase receipt — from an auto parts store, RockAuto, Amazon, Summit Racing, a dealership parts counter, etc. — and AI itemizes every part with its price, adds them to the project, and updates your budget bar automatically. Scanned parts are marked Arrived.

My receipt has multiple pages — can I scan them together?

Yes. In the Maintenance log or a project's Parts section, tap Upload (or Scan Receipt) and select ALL the pages at once. They're read together and itemized into one combined list with the correct grand total — so a single service visit or parts order with several pages stays as one entry. Up to 5 pages per scan.

Can I scan a maintenance receipt?

Yes. In the Maintenance Log, tap Scan Receipt and photograph any service invoice. AI identifies each line-item service with its individual cost, the provider, and the date — and fills the form for you.

What is the Social tab?

It's a new section we're building — a place to show off your garage and connect with other builders. You'll see it in the menu marked 'SOON'; it's locked for now while we build it out. More details as it gets closer.

What's the difference between the plans?

Minimalist (Free): up to 3 cars, 1 dream car, recall checks, and basic tracking.

Enthusiast: up to 8 cars, full maintenance log with receipt scanning, fuel log, unlimited dream cars with savings tracking, and maintenance reminders.

Collector: up to 16 cars, all Enthusiast features plus estimated value tracking, insurance info, collection analytics, and PDF/CSV export.

See the Profile tab for current pricing on each plan.

What happens if I downgrade my plan?

Your data is never deleted when you downgrade. Cars, logs, and dream cars beyond the new plan's limits become read-only — you can view them but not add more until you upgrade again.

What is a Founding Member?

Founding Members joined The Curator App during early beta access. They receive a permanent gold ⭐ badge on their profile and locked-in discounted pricing for life — 40% off Enthusiast and Collector plans.

How do achievements work?

Achievements unlock automatically based on your activity — no action needed. The badge shelf on your Profile shows all 10 badges, which ones you've earned (colored), and which are still locked (greyed out). A hint card shows the next badge you're closest to unlocking.

How does the referral link work?

Your referral link is unique to your account. Share it with friends — when they sign up using your link, they get early access to The Curator App. Future referral rewards (like free months) will be added as the app grows.

How do push notifications work?

Turn on Notifications under Profile → Preferences and allow the browser prompt. You'll get a daily reminder notification covering maintenance due, insurance and registration renewals, loan payments, upcoming events, project task deadlines, and your custom reminders.

Notifications work on every device where you've allowed them — your account supports any number of devices with one subscription.

iPhone users: Apple requires web apps to be installed before they can send notifications. Open thecuratorapp.com in Safari, tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen. Open the app from your home screen and enable notifications from there.

What is the Document Vault and how secure is it?

The Document Vault (Collector plan) stores important car documents — title, registration, insurance card, receipts, inspection reports — on each car's Build tab. Files are encrypted with AES-256 in your browser BEFORE they upload, meaning not even we can open them. Viewing uses 60-second expiring links. PDF and images up to 10 MB per file.

How do Comparable Sales (Market Comps) work?

Collector plan: open any car → Overview tab → Comparable Sales. Log real sales of similar cars from Bring a Trailer, Cars & Bids, eBay Motors, dealers, or private sales — with price, date, mileage, condition, and a listing link. The app calculates the market average and shows a color-coded difference against your car's estimated value, so you can ground the estimate in real market data.

Can I track a loan on my car?

Yes — Enthusiast and Collector plans. Open the car → History tab → Loan / Financing. Record the lender, original amount, current balance, APR, monthly payment, and due day. You get a payoff progress bar, and payment reminders appear on the Today tab when a payment is due within 7 days.

What happens when I sell a car?

Mark it as Sold instead of deleting it (Enthusiast & Collector). The car moves to the Sold Cars card at the bottom of the Garage tab with its complete history preserved — maintenance, mods, events, photos, and documents. The sold car's page shows sale price, total cost basis, maintenance spend, and your true net gain or loss.

What's the difference between Wishlist and Actively Saving?

The Dream List has two sections. Actively Saving cars have a savings goal — they show a progress bar and an Add Funds button. Wishlist cars have no goal yet — just cars you're dreaming about. Leave the Savings Goal blank when adding a car to put it in Wishlist, and set a goal anytime to start saving.

Can I use the app offline?

The app requires an internet connection to load your data and sync changes. There is no offline mode currently — all data lives in your private cloud account so it's accessible from any device.

How do I export my data?

Collector plan only. Go to Profile → Data & Privacy → Export My Data to download a full collection report. You can also export individual car maintenance logs as PDF or CSV from the car detail screen.

What is the fuel log?

The Fuel Log lives inside each car's detail page. It tracks every fill-up — date, gallons, price per gallon, total cost, odometer reading, and fuel type. The app auto-calculates MPG after each fill-up and shows a trend arrow (↑↓) compared to your previous fill-up.

Does the app check for safety recalls?

Yes. Tap any car in your garage and look for the Check Recalls button. The app queries the free NHTSA government database using your VIN (or year/make/model if no VIN is stored) and returns any open safety recalls instantly. No account or fee needed — it uses public safety data. Results include the recall campaign number, affected component, description, and remedy status.

Can I reorder my cars in the garage?

Yes. In the garage list view, grab the ☰ handle on the right side of any car row and drag it to a new position. The order saves automatically. This lets you keep your most-used or most important cars at the top.

What is the Odometer Log?

The Odometer Log is a running history of mileage entries for each car, separate from the Fuel Log. Available on Enthusiast and Collector plans. Tap a car → scroll to Odometer Log → tap + Add Reading to log today's mileage. The app calculates miles driven between entries and shows an annual mileage summary. Use it to document a car's usage over time without needing to fill up.

How do mileage-based reminders work?

When setting a maintenance reminder, you can choose a due mileage instead of (or in addition to) a due date. Enter the odometer reading at which service is due — for example, 55,000 miles for your next oil change. The app compares that against your car's current logged mileage and flags the reminder on your Home and Today screens when you're within 500 miles of the target.

Can I add multiple photos to a car?

Yes. Tap a car → Edit Details → Add Photo. After adding your first photo, you can add more by tapping the + button in the photo viewer. Swipe left and right to browse all photos. Tap any photo to replace or remove it individually.

Can I log multiple services on one maintenance entry?

Yes. When adding a maintenance entry, you can add multiple service lines — each with its own name and cost. Tap + Add Service Line to add more rows. The total cost field sums all lines automatically. This is useful for logging a full service visit where multiple things were done at once.

What is the Share Card?

The Share Card generates a visual image of your car with its key details — make, model, year, color, and mileage. Open any car in your garage, scroll down, and tap Share Card. Once rendered, tap Share to send it via your phone's share sheet — post it to social media, save it to your camera roll, or send it directly to someone.

What is the Parts List in Projects?

The Parts List inside each project lets you track every part you need for a build. Add a part with its name, vendor, cost, part number, and notes. Parts move through four stages: Needed → Ordered → Arrived → Installed. Tap the status badge on any part to advance it to the next stage, or tap the ✎ pencil to edit all fields inline. Part costs count toward the project's budget tracking.

How do I track time spent on a build?

Use the Labor Log inside any project. Tap + Log Hours to add a work session — enter the date, number of hours, whether it was DIY or shop labor, an optional description, and an optional cost. Tap ✎ on any entry to edit it. Total hours and total labor cost roll up automatically in the project's summary stats bar at the top.

Can I add photos to a project?

Yes. Inside any project, scroll to Progress Photos and tap + Add Photo. Choose a stage tag — Before, During, or After — and add an optional caption. You can add up to 30 photos per project. They display in a scrollable gallery with the stage tag overlaid. Tap ✕ on any photo to remove it.

What are Milestones in Projects?

Milestones are key checkpoints for a build — things like 'Engine pulled', 'Paint done', or 'First start'. Add a milestone with a title and an optional target date. The circle on the left marks it complete when tapped. Target dates show urgency: overdue milestones turn red, due-soon ones turn orange. Completed milestones show a date stamp and strike-through.

How do project task due dates work?

When adding or editing a task inside a project, you can set a due date. The task row shows urgency colors: red for overdue, orange for due within 7 days. Incomplete tasks with due dates also surface automatically on your Today tab — overdue ones appear in the red section, upcoming ones in the orange section — so you never miss a build deadline even when you're not in the Projects tab.

What are Resources in Projects?

Resources let you save links directly on a project — part listings, YouTube tutorials, forum threads, or any URL. Tap + Add Link, enter a title and the URL, and it's saved. Tap any saved link to open it in your browser. Use it to keep all your research in one place alongside your tasks and parts.

What does the car anniversary feature do?

If you add a Purchase Date in a car's Edit Details screen, the app will display a 🎉 anniversary banner on your Home screen each year on that date — celebrating how long you've owned the car. The banner shows the number of years and the year you bought it.

What is the Event Log?

The Event Log lets you track every car-related event — track days, car shows, Cars & Coffee meetups, road trips, autocross, rallies, drag races, and more. Available on Enthusiast and Collector plans.

You can access events from the Upcoming Events card on the Home tab (which opens the full Events screen), the Events This Week section on the Today tab, or the Event Log inside each individual car's detail page.

What types of events can I log?

The app supports 10 event types: Track Day, Car Show, Cars & Coffee, Road Trip, Autocross, Drag Race, Cruise Night, Rally / Tour, Concours, and Other. Each event also has a name, date, optional location, optional linked car, and optional notes.

Can I link an event to a specific car?

Yes. When logging an event, you can link it to any car in your garage using the Linked Car field. If you have a car filter chip selected at the top of the Events screen, the form will pre-fill that car automatically.

Linking a car is optional — you can also log events that aren't tied to a specific vehicle. If you try to save without linking a car, the app will prompt you to confirm or go back and link one.

Where do I see upcoming events?

Two places: the Upcoming Events card on the Home tab shows your next 3 scheduled events, and the Events This Week section on the Today tab shows anything coming up in the next 7 days. Tap the Upcoming Events card to open the full Events screen where all past and future events are listed.

Can I see all events for one specific car?

Yes. Tap any car in your garage to open its detail page, then scroll down to the Event Log section. It shows every event ever linked to that car, sorted most recent first. You can add, edit, or delete events directly from there — or tap Clear All to remove that car's entire event history at once.
